The same great features that make your phone ‘smart’ also make it susceptible to data mining, viruses and malicious software. If your phone or mobile device isn’t secure and you loose it, or it gets stolen, then your personal information, including passwords, banking details, emails and photos could be used to access your accounts and/or to steal your identity. So, what can you do to make that smartphone a secure phone? Well, lots actually. We knocked our heads together and came up with a list of some important measures you can take to limit the possibility of someone stealing your personal information and data. Read on to get the lowdown.
Protect the Device
• Enable auto-lock, and set it to the least amount of time (usually 1 minute)
• Password protect any apps that store confidential data (like Dropbox or GDrive)
• Use unique passwords for each app, and make them complex
• Avoid using auto-complete features that store your user names or passwords
• Use a password manager with two-step authentication (some offer more than two)
• Encrypt your data within the device’s settings, or use third-party software
Web and App Security
• Don’t enter usernames, passwords or account info when browsing on a public network
• Turn off Bluetooth functions when you’re not actively using it
• Avoid using any banking or financial apps when using public wifi
• Don’t click on any unrecognized links on sites or within social apps
• Limit posting your email address and mobile phone number online
• Only download apps from trusted manufacturers and websites
Using these methods, you can decrease the likelihood of becoming the victim of data mining and identity theft. Again, nothing’s foolproof. Security precautions are constantly being rethought and revised.
